Introduction to H5P content

H5P content example

Why we are so excited about H5P

There’s a new way of building content and it’s called H5P (H5P.org).

We are excited to share information about H5P and provide support for you to implement this in your digital learning strategy and online courses.

What is H5P?

H5P is a way of building great, interactive learning content. It allows you to create rich and interactive web experiences more efficiently. All you need is a web browser and a website with an H5P plugin.
H5P comes with many advantages, including the ability to:

  • Create richer HTML5 content in existing publishing platforms
  • Share content seamlessly across any H5P capable site
  • Reuse and modify content in your browser at any time

It is also mobile friendly, meaning that it is completely responsive providing your users with the same rich content on their desktop, tablet and phone.

Worried about cost? Fortunately, H5P is open technology. There are tutorials, downloads/demos and documentation are available to help users or aid those who want to join the community and we are also available to work with you.

How does it work?

You can use H5P in two ways:

  • as a plug in for Moodle, WordPress, Drupal
  • develop in H5P and embed into your site/LMS.

A great place to get started is to start an account on H5P.org and embed them into your LMS and CMS.

Content types

One thing that’s great about H5P is there large variety of content types ranging all the way from games, multimedia and questions to social media.

Some content types include:

  • Course presentation
  • Quizzes
  • Chart
  • Image slider
  • Timeline
  • Interactive video (our personal favourite)
  • Twitter user feed

You can view the full list of content types here, https://h5p.org/content-types-and-applications

Examples of how we’ve used H5P

Have a look at the following page, we have some examples of H5P content

http://klevar.com/h5p

Here is one we did for a client, after the images were designed, it took about 5 mins to build. This works best on Chrome.

Will it replace the other tools we use (like Storyline)?

As always, this question is context driven. There are things that Storyline does really well, like complete multimedia and simulations. However, with H5P there are some ways to build really simple, yet engaging content.

For example, we’d rather use H5P accordions than build them in Storyline, so we embed the H5P content into Storyline!
